In Sicily, hunting wild mushrooms is an old tradition that demonstrates the Sicilian love and passion for true craftsmanship and their respect and admiration for the natural treasures of their island. Rather than taking a trip to the supermarket, it is common for Sicilians to collect their own ingredients to prepare their dishes with, often from land they own themselves. In my eyes, this tradition is a perfect illustration of the Sicilian’s connection with their ancestral land.

In these photographs, Angelo is picking mushrooms from the land his family has owned for decades. He has been collecting these mushrooms—as well as nuts, chestnuts, strawberries and grain—from his family’s land since he was a child.
